島のえきを引き継いで、私たちの活動も4年目に入りました。
たくさんの出会いがありました。
猫と人とが近くにいるという、あたりまえのようで、かけがえのない日々を通して、私たちが見つめ直してきたものがあります。
それは、「共に暮らす」ということ。
猫たちのそばで、人が癒されたり、守ろうとしたり、思いを交わしたりすること。
その積み重ねが、どれほど豊かで、大切な時間なのかということです。
けれど、今ある場所や仕組みが、これからもずっと続くとは限りません。
建物や制度にゆだねられた未来を待つのではなく、自らもう一つの軸を立てることにしました。
それが、「ねこのとなり」です。
「ねこのとなり」は、ブランドであると同時に、わたしたちの願いです。
猫のとなりにある、やさしさやおかしみ、ぬくもりといったかけがえのないものを、さまざまなかたちで届けていく。
それによって、田代島の猫たちの暮らしを持続可能なものにしていく。
そんな、まっすぐで静かな挑戦を込めた取り組みです。
私たちが目指しているのは、単に「猫グッズ」を届けることではありません。
猫とともにある時間の中で生まれる気持ち――
たとえば、思わずふふっと笑ってしまう瞬間、そっと背中を押されるような安心感、
もう少しだけ、やさしくなってみようと思える余白。
そんな“感情ごと”を、モノや物語として手渡すこと。
それが「ねこのとなり」が果たしたい役割です。
たとえば、お気に入りのマグカップに描かれた猫のしぐさから、島の猫たちの顔を思い出すかもしれません。
ふと手に取った布小物から、「この猫、あの子じゃない？」と会話が生まれるかもしれません。
そんなふうに、「ねこのとなり」が、日常のすき間にそっと入り込んで、
田代島の猫たちのぬくもりとつながっていく。
それは、観光とも違う、寄付とも違う、新しい“つながり”のかたちだと思っています。
猫と人の“共暮（ともぐらし）”の文化を育み、広げること。
それが「ねこのとなり」のビジョンです。
猫と人がともに、しあわせに暮らせる未来をつくること。
それが私たちのミッションです。
「ねこのとなり」は、どこかで偶然立ち止まりたくなるような、やわらかな余白のある存在でありたいと思っています。
田代島の、猫たちの、そして関わってくださるみなさんの声に耳を傾けながら、少しずつ進んでいきます。
まだはじまったばかりの取り組みで、かたちになるにはもう少し時間がかかります。
けれど私たちは、ひとつひとつ丁寧に、想いをこめて、「ねこのとなり」をつくっていく覚悟です。

A Special Announcement and What Lies Ahead (Part 2)
— We are beginning Neko no Tonari.
It has now been four years since we took over the operation of Shima no Eki.
Over that time, we’ve encountered so many people.
Through days spent close to the cats—something that feels so natural yet so irreplaceable—we’ve had the chance to re-examine what truly matters.
That is, living together.
The quiet moments of being healed by the cats, the instinct to protect them, the gentle exchanges of unspoken feelings—
These small, everyday experiences are what give richness and meaning to life.
But we also understand that the places and systems we rely on now won’t necessarily be here forever.
Rather than waiting for the future to be shaped by buildings or institutions, we decided to lay down another foundation ourselves.
That is Neko no Tonari—a name that means “By the Cat’s Side” in Japanese.
It is more than a brand. It is a heartfelt wish.
We aim to share the warmth, charm, and quiet humor that come from being beside cats—in all kinds of forms.
Through this, we hope to build a sustainable life for the cats of Tashirojima.
It is a gentle yet earnest challenge we’ve set for ourselves.
What we want to offer isn’t just “cat-themed goods.”
It’s the feelings that arise when you’re close to cats—
That moment of a quiet laugh, a subtle sense of relief, or the realization that you can soften your heart just a little more.
We want to deliver these emotions as tangible things—as stories, as items you can hold.
That is the role Neko no Tonari seeks to fulfill.
Maybe a cat’s pose on a favorite mug will remind you of a face from the island.
Maybe a small fabric item will spark a conversation: “Isn’t this that cat from Tashirojima?”
In such ways, Neko no Tonari quietly nestles into everyday life,
Creating a new kind of connection—one that is not quite tourism, nor simply donation.
Our vision is to nurture and spread a culture of “Kyōgura-shi”—living in harmony with cats.
Our mission is to build a future where cats and people can live happily together.
We hope that Neko no Tonari will be the kind of presence that invites you to pause, gently—
A space with soft edges, where something good lingers.
We will move forward step by step, always listening to the voices of the cats, of Tashirojima, and of everyone who supports us.
This is just the beginning, and it will take time to fully take shape.
But we are committed—truly—to building Neko no Tonari with care, one piece at a time.
