「ねこのとなりの雑貨店」オープンのお知らせ

前回、「ねこのとなり」をはじめますとお知らせしました。
では実際に、何をしていくのか――今、私たちの頭の中にはたくさんの妄想と構想があふれています。日々猫たちとふれあい、猫を目当てにこの島を訪れてくださる方々の笑顔にふれるたび、「もっとできることはないか」と考えるようになりました。

「ねこのとなり」は、島のえきの猫たちをはじめとする島猫たちと、私たち、そして訪れる人々が、互いに寄り添い支え合いながら、無理なくつづけられるかたちをつくっていくための新たなチャレンジです。

もともと私たちは、「持続可能」とは“ただ続けること”ではなく、“必要なときには終えることもできる”状態のことだと考えてきました。
終わることを恐れずに未来を描くからこそ、次の担い手に安心してバトンを渡すことができる――そんなふうに思っていたのです。
そして、その判断は決して人間の都合だけでなされるものではなく、猫たちの暮らしや生き方にそっと寄り添いながら、静かに決めていくべきことなのだと。

けれど、島のえきというひとつの事業だけでは、“終えられる”未来をどうしても描くことができませんでした。
目の前の猫たちが天寿をまっとうするまで見守りたいと思えば思うほど、その過程で観光地としての魅力は薄れ、事業としての力が少しずつ弱まっていくのを考えざるを得ませんでした。
そしてその先には、猫たちを支える力すら失ってしまうかもしれないという、不安と矛盾が立ちはだかっていました。

“終わることもできる”と思っていたはずが、“終われない”という現実。
その脆さに向き合っていたとき、「建物の解体」という大きな転機がやってきました。

でも、それは同時に、新しい道を探すきっかけにもなりました。
島の中だけで完結するのではなく、これまで田代島が育んできた“猫と人とのあたたかい文化”を、島の外へと伝えていく。観光という一過性の体験ではなく、日々の暮らしの中で「ねこのとなり」を感じてもらえるようなかたちで届けていく。そんな試みが、また島に生きる猫たちを支える新たな循環になっていくのではないかと考えたのです。

そうしてはじまるのが、「ねこのとなり」であり、今回オープンする「ねこのとなりの雑貨店」です。

オンライン上に、小さなお店を開きます。
これまで「島のえき」で取り扱ってきたセレクト商品を引き継ぎつつ、これからは「ねこのとなり」オリジナルの商品も少しずつ増やしていく予定です。猫たちとの日々から生まれたアイデア、訪れてくださった方々との対話から育まれた想い、そして“猫のいる幸せ”を、かたちにしてお届けしたいと思っています。

そして、オンラインショップにとどまらず、商品をもっと多くの場所に届けるための卸売という展開も視野に入れています。猫を愛する全国のショップやギャラリー、カフェなどとつながりながら、田代島の空気や猫たちの存在をそっと届けていけたら。そんな広がりを、これから少しずつ実現していきたいと考えています。

また、「島のえき」は解体で終わるのではなく、新たな建物として生まれ変わらせる計画も、心の中で静かに育てています。これまで以上に猫たちと自然の中でのびやかに過ごせて、訪れる人がもっと深く島とつながれるような場所へ。そんな場所を、これから新たにかたちにしていけたらと思っています。

さらに、例えば「ねこのとなりの隠れ宿」とでも名付けたくなるような、猫と自然と人がもっと深くつながれる場所をつくれたら――そんな夢想もふくらんでいます。これまで以上に猫たちとのびやかに過ごせて、島に泊まってゆっくりとその空気を味わえるような宿泊空間。そんなものがあったらいいなあと、静かに思い描いているところです。
とはいえ、これらはすべて、まだ頭の中にある妄想のかたちです。

私たちは、ここからはじまるすべての活動を、クラウドファンディングのようなものだと捉えています。
資金を募るというよりも、「ねこのとなり」や「ねこのとなりの雑貨店」そのものが、共感や応援をエネルギーに変えて、妄想や夢を現実へと動かしていく“しくみ”でありたいのです。

遠くにいても、田代島や猫たちのとなりにいるような気持ちになれるような場所。
そんな雑貨店として、あたたかく育てていけたらと思っています。
どうか、これからの歩みも、見守っていただけたらうれしいです。

Announcement: The Opening of “Neko no Tonari no Zakkaten”

Previously, we announced the beginning of “Neko no Tonari.”
So what exactly are we going to do? The truth is, our minds are overflowing with dreams and ideas.
Each day spent with the island cats, and the smiles of those who visit this island just to see them, have made us wonder: “Isn’t there something more we can do?”

“Neko no Tonari” is a new challenge—one that aims to create a way of living and supporting each other that is gentle, sustainable, and shared between the cats of Shima no Eki, the island itself, us, and all the people who visit.

From the beginning, we’ve believed that sustainability isn’t just about continuing indefinitely. It’s also about being able to end things when the time comes.
By accepting the possibility of an end, we can envision a future—and confidently pass the baton to those who come next.
And above all, we believe such decisions shouldn’t be based solely on human convenience. They must be made gently, in alignment with the lives and rhythms of the cats themselves.

However, Shima no Eki alone did not allow us to picture a future that could truly be “ended.”
The more we wished to care for the cats until the end of their natural lives, the more we found ourselves realizing that the island’s appeal as a tourist destination may fade, and with it, the business itself.
We couldn’t help but recognize this quiet decline—and with it, the looming fear that we might one day lose the power to support the cats altogether.

We thought we could “end things when needed,” but the truth was we were facing a reality where we couldn’t end them.
It was in the midst of this vulnerability that a major turning point appeared: the planned demolition of the Shima no Eki building.

But that challenge also became the spark for a new path.
Rather than keeping everything confined to the island, we began to see the possibility of sharing the warm culture of “cats and people” that Tashirojima has cultivated for so long.
Not as fleeting tourism, but as something that can be felt in daily life, something that can be brought into your everyday surroundings.

And so, “Neko no Tonari” begins—with the opening of our new online store, Neko no Tonari no Zakkaten.

We’re launching a small online shop.
Alongside selected goods from the old Shima no Eki, we’ll gradually introduce original products inspired by our everyday life with the island cats.
These items are born from moments with the cats, conversations with visitors, and all the quiet joy that comes from simply being beside a cat.
We want to shape those feelings and deliver them to you.

In the future, we also plan to explore wholesale distribution, so our products can be found in more places—like cat-loving shops, galleries, and cafés across the country.
We hope to share the atmosphere of Tashirojima and its cats, quietly and warmly, with the wider world.

And Shima no Eki will not end with demolition—we are quietly nurturing a plan to rebuild.
We hope to create a new space where cats and people can relax together more freely in nature, and where visitors can connect more deeply with the island than ever before.

Furthermore, we’ve started to dream of a space we might one day call “Neko no Tonari no Kakure Yado” (“The Hidden Inn by the Cats’ Side”)—a quiet place where people, cats, and the island’s natural world can be in harmony.
A place to stay overnight, take a deep breath, and experience the healing presence of the cats.
It’s still only a dream, quietly imagined—but it’s one we hold close.

All of these ideas—whether online store, inn, or new building—are, in a way, like a form of crowdfunding.
Not by asking for donations, but by inviting others to share in the vision.
We want “Neko no Tonari” and “Neko no Tonari no Zakkaten” to become mechanisms for turning empathy and encouragement into real-world action—into something sustainable and alive.

Even from far away, we hope this can be a place where you feel close to Tashirojima, and to the cats who live there.
