【大切なお知らせと、これからのこと③】新たな「島のえき」を目指して

以前、「島のえき」の建物が2030年度に解体される予定であることをお伝えしました。
その後も、石巻市の担当課と話し合いを重ねています。

細かな経緯は省きますが、市からは「建物を解体することで島のえきがなくなるのであれば、合併特例債による解体を見送ることも検討したい」というご意向をいただきました。（あくまでも担当職員の気持ち）とてもありがたいことです。行政としても、島のえきが果たしてきた役割や、島を訪れる人々とのつながりを大切に思ってくださっていることを感じました。

しかし、老朽化が進む建物は、これから先どれほど持つのか——それが現実的な課題です。
そして同時に、私たち自身がこの場所をどう未来へつないでいくのかを問われているようにも感じます。

島のえきは、ただの売店や休憩所ではありません。
猫たちと人が出会い、旅人が癒され、島の暮らしを少し垣間見る——そんな“小さな入口”であり続けてきました。
だからこそ、この場所がなくなるという選択肢は、今の私たちの中にはありません。

市の支援の形に感謝しながらも、私たちは「自分たちの手で、新しい島のえきを建てる」ことを目標に進む決意を固めました。
行政任せではなく、島の現場にいる者として、地域の声や猫たちの暮らし、そして訪れる人々の思いを受け止めながら、次の時代の“島のえき”を形にしていきたいと思っています。

これから先、資金のこと、設計や工事のこと、そして運営のあり方など、課題は山ほどあります。
それでも、この島を愛し、猫たちを見守ってくださる皆さんとともに、少しずつ歩みを進めていけたらと願っています。
「島のえきの次の姿」を、自分たちの力でつくり、未来へつなげていく。
その覚悟を、今日ここでお伝えします。

A Special Announcement and What Lies Ahead (Part 3)
— Toward a New Shima no Eki

Previously, we informed you that the Shima no Eki building was scheduled to be demolished in fiscal year 2030.
Since then, we have continued discussions with the relevant department of Ishinomaki City.

While I will omit the detailed background, the city has expressed the view that “if demolishing the building would result in the loss of Shima no Eki, we would like to consider postponing the demolition funded by the municipal merger bonds.”
(This reflects the feelings of the staff in charge.)
We are deeply grateful for this. It made us feel that the city truly values the role Shima no Eki has played, as well as the connections it has fostered between the island and those who visit it.

That said, the building continues to age, and the very real question remains: how much longer can it last?
At the same time, we feel we are being asked how we ourselves will carry this place forward into the future.

Shima no Eki is not just a shop or a rest stop.
It has been a small gateway where cats and people meet, where travelers find comfort, and where one can catch a glimpse of everyday island life.
For that reason, the option of letting this place disappear does not exist for us.

While we are grateful for the city’s support, we have resolved to move forward with the goal of building a new Shima no Eki with our own hands.
Rather than relying solely on the administration, we want to shape the next generation of Shima no Eki as people who are on the ground—listening to local voices, caring for the lives of the cats, and honoring the feelings of those who visit the island.

Looking ahead, there are countless challenges: funding, design and construction, and how the facility should be operated.
Even so, we hope to take these steps little by little together with everyone who loves this island and watches over the cats.

To create “the next form of Shima no Eki” through our own efforts and carry it into the future—
that is the commitment we wish to share with you today.
